Trade - The industry
Products divide themselves into clear groups. A few larger companies manufacture products in most of the areas outlined below, but they are in the minority. A number of non-dental manufacturers produce specialised items for the dental market, needles, and x-ray film for example. Most manufacturers specialise in one or two of the following product areas:
Burs & abrasivesCabinetryCross-infection control productsDiamond instrumentsEndodontics Filling materialsHandpiecesImplantsImpression materialsLaboratory equipment Orthodontic specialitiesPlasters and investmentsPrecious and non-precious metalsPlastic materials TeethX-ray equipmentSurgery equipmentRoot canal instruments
Other than manufacturers, there are also dental dealers, sometimes referred to as retailers. They buy products from the manufacturers and distributors, which they then sell - with any associated service - direct to the end user. The dental dealer will stock products ranging from the smallest items to large capital equipment such as dental chairs, units and x-ray systems. The dealers are highly competitive. Many provide illustrated catalogues which customers can use for placing orders (mostly by phone). Sales promotion material, announcing special prices or introductory offers, is often sent out with monthly statements.
