Hygienist - The personal qualities required by a Dental Hygienist
Good communication skills are vital to become a Dental Hygienist as the main part of the role is that of an educator.
Explaining to patients the techniques for cleaning the teeth and the reasons why good cleaning is so important requires patience, understanding and a pleasant, confident manner.
The Hygienist must be able to identify to the patient those areas where a patient is having difficulty in removing plaque and then work with the patient to modify his or her brushing technique to ensure effective cleaning. Many patients will need to be shown how to use dental floss or other interdental aids to clean the surfaces between the teeth. Motivating patients to continue to clean their teeth effectively is vital; if this is not carried out routinely, oral health will not improve.Over time poor oral care will lead to tooth loss.
Hygienists need to express to patients how an effective cleaning routine works hand in hand with an understanding of healthy eating. There are many patients who do not realise the dangers of hidden sugars in processed foods and the dangers they hold for the health of their teeth.
