Dentist - Becoming a Dentist
Full training and completion of a professional qualification is mandatory to become a dentist.
Courses
There are thirteen Dental Schools in the UK, all of which are located in one of the UK's major cities. Courses last for 5 years and lead to either a University Degree (for example, Bachelor of Dental Surgery) or a licence to practice dentistry (e.g. Licenciate in Dental Surgery (LDS) granted by the Royal College of Surgeons).
Entry requirements
The entry requirements are based upon passing "A" Level examinations, upper grades being mandatory in subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Zoology or Biology and Maths. Some Dental Schools offer an extra preliminary pre-dental year for those without the necessary science based entry requirements.
The dental curriculum includes a sound theoretical and practical training in all aspects of dentistry against a background of general medicine.
